Taming flames of passion with the wisdom of the mind
Kamadeva is the Hindu god of human love or desire. Other names for him include; Atanu (one without a body), Ragavrinta (stalk of passion), Ananga (incorporeal), Kandarpa (“inflamer even of a god”),Manmadha (churner of hearts), Manasija, Madana , Ratikanta (lord of Rati), Pushpavan, Pushpadhanva (one with bow of flowers) or just Kama (“longing”). Kamadeva, is son of Hindu goddess Sri and, additionally, Pradyumna, Krishna’s son is considered as incarnation of Kamadeva. It is a misconception that kama means love, kama literally means trishNa(Sanskrit) i.e. desire or thirst.
This fire continually burns within us giving us the much needed energy or fuel to fulfil ourselves. Not all times the fire is for things favourable to us. We need to learn to tame this fire. This fire burns in our Sacral/Swathisthana/sex chakra located two inches below the navel. This is called Kamaagni and through this fire we fulfil our needs to be successful, wealthy, fulfilled, worthy, appreciated, loved and respected. There are times when this fire goes out of control and burns for unfavourable things.. Then it takes the shape of lust, greed, hunger, revenge, possessiveness and we are ready to go at all lengths to fulfil ourselves. Yogis and ascetics on spiritual path have tried various ways to tame this fire… used mantras and tantras and tried to curb the sexual urges even through drastic measures such as deactivating the organs. It takes a strong willpower and mind power to control these urges.
The boundary between desire and lust is not too high and when lust happens subconscious mind knows it..when we are eating more than needed, buying more than required, getting addicted to games, porn, drugs, liquor, chatting, sex.. when we start crossing our boundaries of safety.. What is prohibitive becomes exciting..it could be prohibitive for body or mind or morality.. we lose focus and take on a path ridden with guilt, destruction and losses. desire of the opposite sex is one of the most powerful attractions.. but when cupid strikes, it takes over the senses.. we forget to see our boundaries.. whether it is extra marital, or legal or the right person.. nothing matters.. whether it will jeopardize our health, or career or business or family life or present marital state.. brain stops thinking.. what matters is fulfilment of the Kamaagni..
Bhagavata Purana describes the attachment of Gopis to the flute of Krishna as “First comes attraction expressed through the eyes, then intense attachment in the mind, then determination, loss of sleep, becoming emaciated, uninterested in external things, shamelessness, madness, becoming stunned and finally.. loss of senses.. .. This is how Kamaagni threatens to engulf..
So how to get control of the senses in these situations? Firstly know that it is the third eye ruled by Saturn which gives wisdom and mind control.. Shiva destroyed Kamadeva with his third eye. Understand that fire can be tamed but should not be doused.. If doused, the person loses will to be alive.. loses joy of life.. taste of life.. which is the element of this chakra.. In certain Vaishnava traditions it is taught that sex is bad and brahmacaraya is the correct way of life.. people try different means to avoid sex and become emotional wrecks this way. In some traditions it is taught that one should lead a desire less existence and be contended.. This attitude is fear based and takes away the Joy of life. This fire has to be transformed to useful purposes..

If you are addicted to rich foods.. start loving healthy foods..transform your love for junk foods and desserts to salads, sprouts and greens by shaping them the way you like them best. If you are addicted to alcohol/smoking/drugs.. start loving healthy beverages and good food and develop interests that keep you occupied and keep you healthy and happy.. it could be a hobby, gym, music, games, friends, activities.. keep on creating new situations to keep you interested, excited, educated and motivated. Understand that only when you love yourself and honour yourself, you will not abuse yourself. If you are addicted to sex, start discovering Inner joy and self love and do things for yourself that make you happy .. realise that you are not dependant on anyone to make you happy and you alone are sufficient..Discover different ways and activities to keep yourself joyful and excited. If you are falling in love with someone outside your prohibitive boundary then transform your relation with the person in the mind from a male to a brother or father.. female to sister or daughter .. transform lust to respect..
