The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is located at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and is one of the most highly revered shrines of Lord Shiva. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva who is also known as Vishwanath or Vishweshwara, meaning the "Ruler of the World". At the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the holy 'Jyotirlingum' is placed in a silver alter in the sanctum sanctorum. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (Linga of light) of Lord Shiva.
In fact the Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga is considered as foremost of all Jyotirlingas and also called as king of Jyotirlingas. Offering Puja at Kashi Vishwanath is considered as equivalent to offering Puja at all other 11 Jyotirlingas combined. As per Shiv Mahapuran, once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu were arguing about supremacy of their creations. To humble them Lord Shiva pierced the three worlds with an endless pillar of light (Jyotirlinga), whose end neither could find.
