Sri Pratyangira Devi is a fierce and powerful manifestation of the Supreme feminine energy. Amongst the group of Ashta Matrika Goddesses, Pratyangira Mata is also known as Maa Narasimhi, Nikumbala or Nikumbhila and Atharvana Bhadrakali. According to the Tripura Rahasya texts, Maa Pratyangira is the manifestation of the powerful and cruel form of Maha Tripura Sundari. She is also referred to as Atharv Angirasa or Atharvana Bhadrakali, the deity of magical spells according to the Atharva Veda. In Angirasa Veda there are many legends associated with the origin of Sri Pratyangira devi. 

According to one legend, there was once a demon named Hiranyakashipu, he had a son named Prahlada. Despite being a demon’s son, Prahlada was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. This angered the demon and he persuaded and tortured his son to stop him from offering prayers and worship to Lord Vishnu. The demon made many attempts to kill Prahlada but he was saved by Lord Vishnu’s grace. One day Hiranyakashipu tried to poison Prahlada’s meal, and this is when Lord Vishnu took the fierce form of half lion and half man named ‘Narasimha’. Lord Narasimha killed Hiranyakashipu and drank His blood but after drinking the demon’s blood, Lord Narasimha became violent and destructive. Thus, to calm him down Lord Shiva took the form of a bird like creature named ‘Sarabha’ with the help of Maa Parvati, Maa Lakshmi and Maa Saraswati. This bird possessed the power to devour any huge animal that came in its way. One wing of this bird represented Maa Shoolini and the other wing represented Maa Pratyangira. When this huge bird like creature approached Lord Narsimha, the Lion faced Lord became more angry and took the form of Ashta Mukha (8 faces) Ganda Berundha Narasimha. Sarabha failed to calm this Ugra form of Lord Narasimha. This is when Goddess Pratyangira emerged from Sarabha’s wing, in the form of a half lioness and half woman to calm the fierce Lord Ashta Mukha Ganda Berundha Narasimha. Pratyangira Goddess was larger than Sarabeshwarar and fiercer than Lord Narasimha’s avatar. She had one thousand lion faces that roared loudly, She had two thousand protruding eyes that were blood red and two thousand hands that held several weapons and one thousand blood dripping tongues sticking out from Her mouth. Goddess Pratyangira was successful in calming Lord Narsimha. 

According to another legend, Goddess Pratyangira Devi originated from Shiva's third eye and is depicted with a Lion head and rest of body in human form, which symbolizes balance between good and evil. Goddess Pratyangira is also conferred with the name Narashimhika. It is also believed that Pratyangira Devi is Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Devi Shakti, combined in one and also another form of Goddess Bhadrakali. Goddess Pratyangira is the powerful, ferocious and profound aspect of the Divine Mother and is fiercely protective.
