This Puja is also called Sarvapitri Amavasya or Mahalaya Amavasya.

This Puja is performed on the last day of the Shradh period and is dedicated to all the ancestors including those whose details have been forgotten. On this day is Amavasya(new moon) and offering Shradh Puja on this day is of immense importance in Hinduism as it is said that all ancestors descend on this day seeking liberation. Shradh puja is performed for departed souls of ancestors so they can attain peace and liberation and find a place in heaven. The significance and importance associated with Shradh puja is mentioned in various Hindu Puranas such as Agni Purana, Garuda Purana and Matysa Purana. As per Garuda Purana the souls that do not receive Pind daan, Tarpan etc. wander aimlessly on the Earth. Shradh ritual is done to fulfil and satiate the unsatisfied desires of the ancestor's souls which are trapped in our world due to strong desires that stay in soul even after death. The Shradh rituals help cleanse all the sins and help them rest in peace with their souls liberated and to seek their blessings. It is believed that the Shradh rituals when performed with full faith, devotion and respect help the departed souls rest in peace making them bless their descendant with protection, peace and prosperity. Pitru Paksha Shradh rituals benefits ancestors (12 generations back) even whose death dates have been forgotten.

This is the best puja for pacifying Pitru dosha. Pitru Dosha arises when one does not perform the rituals of Tarpan for the peace of souls of his/her ancestors. The Pitru Dosha arises only when the souls of ancestors are not in peace. Pitru Dosha can be identified by reading the birth chart of an individual. Also it is believed that the rituals of Shraddha or Tarpan are helpful in reducing the effect of Kaal Sarp Dosha.
