Makar Sankranti is also called festival of Sun God and is a celebrated as the festival of gratitude and plenitude. On this day Surya Devta, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Mahalakshmi are worshipped. On Makar Sankranti Goddess Mahalaxmi appeared during the churning of the Oceans (Sagar Manthan) and chose Lord Vishnu as Her consort. It is the date when Uttarayan period starts and the Sun God moves to Capricorn zodiac and begins His journey northwards and which lasts for about 6 months and after this, He starts his journey southwards for 6 months. On this day, Lord Surya, the Sun God, is worshipped as the great benefactor. This festival announces the end of the winter season and people worship Sun God to express thankfulness for bringing the spring season. As the inauspicious preceding months have passed, any auspicious and sacred rituals can commence from this day.
Another story behind the auspiciousness of this day is that on this day Sun moves in Capricorn sign which is ruled by His estranged Son Shani (Saturn). Thus this day marks the day of reconciliation between the father (Sun) and son (Saturn) which heralds the time to let go of the past, of ego, of arrogance and come together as one. The malefic effect of Saturn and Sun are removed by doing puja on this day. Those who have Shani Dosha or Surya Dosha in their chart benefit immensely from puja on this day.
