What is Parthiv Shivling Puja, Parthiv Shivling Puja Benefits

From time immemorial the Hindu deity Lord Shiva is worshipped in His abstract form of a Shivling or Shiva Lingam, as it is the wish of the Lord to be worshipped in this form. The Shivling posses the powerful energy vibrations of Lord Shiva and found in all temples of Lord Shiva. Worship of Shivling is done by performing Abhishekham, which is sacred bathing the Shivalinga with a mixture of liquids like, Milk, Water, Yogurt, Honey, and Ghee (clarified butter). Worshipping the Shivling has many benefits of blessings for the devotee.

The word Parthiv means Earth. A Parthiv Shivling is handmade from mud and worshipped. Lord Shiva is the Lord of Earth element and is also connected to nature. The Parthiv puja or Parthiv Shivling Puja has special significance as the devotee is rewarded with manyblessings. Since the Shivling is made by the devotee with hands by molding mud/clay into the shape of Shivling, the energy and wishes of the devotee get transferred to the Shivling. The Parthiv Shivling is said to be favored by Lord Shiva because it is made by the devotee himself/herself.

Sieved mud/clay is mixed with water, Cow dung, Bhasma or Bhasam (ash), Honey or Jaggery, Chandan paste and molded into a Shivling. The ritualistic Pranpratishta of the Parthiv Shivling is done and then worshipped. The Shivling size ideally should not be morethan the size of the thumb of the devotee and should not be made higher than the size of 12 thumbs or else the purpose of the puja is not served.

Parthiv Shivling puja at home is very auspicious and generally done throughout the Shravan Maas, especially on Mondays of that month. Twelve Parthiv Shivlings are made and worshipped following the puja vidhi (rituals). The worship includes offerings of Bael or Bilwa leaves, White Kaner flower (Oleander), Milk, Sugar and Rice grains on top of the Shivlings. The rest of the day should be spent in chanting mantras and singing the praise of Lord Shiva. Before Sunset the Shivlings are immersed in a river, sea, or a water body. This puja benefits the devotee many folds ranging from blessings of attaining Moksha, obliteration of sins to material fulfillment, relief from malefic effects of the Navagrahas (the nine Planets), including planet Shani (Saturn) Parthiv pooja is especially beneficial for healing of physical ailments and diseases.

Mythology records in Puranas say that Lord Rama had made, installed and performed Parthiv Shivling puja at Rameshwaram, to be liberated from Brahmahatyamahapatakam, the sin of killing a Brahmana as Ravana was a Brahmana. Another legend is about Lord Shani(Saturn) who performed the Parthiv puja to gain more power over His own father, Lord Sun.
