About Maa Shailputri

The auspicious Hindu festival of Navratri (9 nights) is dedicated to the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga or Maa Durga, the Divine Mother. The first-day puja starts with Maa Shailputri puja which is the first of Maa Durga's form to be worshipped. The name Shailputri is an amalgamation of two words "Shaila" (Sanskrit) means mountain and "Putri" means daughter. Maa Shailputri was born to the King Hemavat, the King of Himalaya mountains, and therefore revered as Shailputri Mata. She is also known as Bhavani, Sati, Parvati, and Hemavati.
 

The Iconography Goddess Shailputri is depicted by Maa Shailputri sitting on a Bull, Trident/Trishul in Her right hand, and a Lotus in Her left hand. Maa Shailputri's forehead is adorned by a crescent Moon. She is the wife/consort of Lord Shiva. Maa Shailputri represents the Muladhara Chakra or Root Chakra. Focussing on the Muladhara Chakra on 1st day of Navratri puja, energizes and strengthens the Muladhara Chakra by the grace of Maa Shailputri and She rules planet Mars (Mangal) and Ketu.
 

She is worshiped along with Mahadev, as she is the consort (wife) of Lord Shiva. She is also the mother of Kumar Kartikey and Ganesha. As Maa Shailputri is Prakriti (Mother Nature), She looks after all living organisms including human beings, animals, trees, shrubs, plants, and even tiny living things on Earth.
 

As per Shiv Mahapuran and other ancient Hindu mythologies, Maa Shailputri in Her previous birth was Devi Sati, daughter of Prajapati Daksha. Devi Sati got married to Mahadev/Lord Shiva, which was not favored by Daksha. King Daksha purposely did not invite Lord Shiva and Devi Sati for the Maha Yagna which He had organized, where all other Gods/Demi-Gods were invited. Devi Sati felt deeply insulted and defied Lord Shiva's advice to not go to Her father's Yagna. Her father ignored Her when She visited the Yagna ceremony. This behavior along with that the insult caused to Her husband, Lord Shiva, intensified Maa Sati's feeling of insult and She sacrificed Herself through self-immolation in the fire of the Yagna. Losing Devi Sati had made Mahadev so grieved and furious that He decided to live in isolation performing penance for many eras. Then Devi Sati was reborn as Maa Shailputri.
