Holi, (Holika Dahan on 20th March, and Dhulandi on 21st March 2019) is the festival of colours that is celebrated to welcome the arrival of spring or Falgun (February-March). Holi celebrations across the country go on over two days. The first day is ‘Holika Dahan’ (Holika bonfire) or Chhoti Holi and the second day is celebrated as Dhuleti, Dhulandi or Dhulivandan when people play with colours and share festive dishes and sweets. This is an auspicious occasion that marks the conquest of the auspicious over inauspicious and good over evil. It is also a day to celebrate with your loved ones and family.

The story of the spirit behind Holika Dahan goes as follows. In the Bhagvata Purana, it is mentioned that King Hiranyakashipu through his austere penance pleased Lord Brahma for the boon of immortality. However, Lord Brahma refused to fulfill his desire. Then he requested Brahma for a boon that protects him against any living entity, demigods, demons, humans, and animals. A boon against death within or outside his palace, during the daytime or at night, on the ground or in the sky.

Then empowered by Lord Brahma, the demonic king Hiranyakashipu started misusing the boon and committing atrocities against the innocent. He despised his own son Prahlada who worshipped Lord Vishnu. He then decided to get rid of his son at the hand of his sister Holika. Instead of burning Prahlada, Holika got burnt herself giving rise to the festival of Holika Dahan highlighting victory over evil. Finally, Lord Vishnu as Narasimha (half man, half lion) killed the king in the evening at the threshold of his palace by disemboweling him with His nails, bypassing the conditional boon of Brahma.
