The Agni Kurma Samudra Manthan Shaligram Shila is meritorius. Agni is Fire or Agni Dev, who has been worshipped since ancient times. He is significant in Hindu Puja rituals and is regarded by devotees. Lord Agni purifies the atmosphere and activates passion, helps to move ahead in life with drive. Kurma means Tortoise and refers to the Kurma Avatar of Lord Vishnu. Lord Kurma, a huge and mighty Tortoise, appeared during the Samudra Manthan(churning of the Celestial Milky Ocean). His back served as the base for Mount Mandara, which was used as the churning stick. He blesses devotees with stability, longevity, patience etc.

The Legend has it that the Samudra Manthan is mentioned in the Puranas. The Devas ( Demi Gods) and Asuras or Demons decided to churn the Celestial Ocean, Kshirasāgara(the Milky Ocean), for the pot of Amrit, the Nectar of immortality. Mount Mandara was used as the Churning stick, Vasuki, the Snake King, was used as the rope to churn and Lord Kurma, was the base for the churning stick. The Devas held one end of Vasuki and the Asuras held the other, to churn the Ocean. Many auspicious, as well as negative by products emerged during Samudra Manthan including Gods and Goddesses, like, Goddess Laxmi. The fatal poison Halahala purged up too, which could have finished the Universe. Lord Shiva drank the Halahala and held it in His Throat, which made His Throat turn Blue. Finally Lord Dhanvantari emerged with the Amrit Kalash(pot of Amrit) which was distributed among Devas for immortality.

The powers of the Shaligram Shala has been praised in the Puranas, including the Shiv Puran, in which Lord Shiva specifies that the mere sight of this sacred stone or worshipping it is equivalent to worshipping a thousand Shivling. The Shaligram stone is found in its natural form only in the banks of Kali Gandaki river, Nepal and marks the presence of God in it and so does not require Pran Prathishta or consecration. It is worshipped by conducting Abhishek with Water and Tulsi leaves and a mixture of Cow Milk(without boiling), Curd, Ghee, Honey, Sugar.
