About Chakshumati Puja

Chakshumati Puja is a sacred ritual dedicated to Surya Dev, the Sun God, who is revered as the divine source of light, vision, vitality, health and knowledge. The Sanskrit word Chakshu means eyes, and Surya Dev is traditionally worshipped as the giver of light and sight, whose divine radiance dispels darkness and ignorance.

The Chakshushopanishad, also known as Chakshushmati Vidya, is a sacred Sanskrit text containing powerful prayers invoking Surya Dev for the protection of eyesight, relief from eye ailments and preservation of vision. Its verses seek divine blessings for clear and healthy eyesight while also praying for the removal of ignorance and the awakening of inner wisdom.

In the Vedic tradition, Surya Dev is revered as the sustainer of life and the embodiment of strength, vitality, intelligence, clarity and self-realisation. Just as the Sun illuminates the entire world, His divine grace is believed to illuminate the mind, strengthen awareness and guide individuals towards physical and spiritual well-being.

In today's world, prolonged use of mobile phones, computers and digital screens has made eye strain, dryness, blurred vision and visual fatigue increasingly common. Many individuals also experience weak eyesight, near-sightedness, far-sightedness and age-related eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

The main objective of Chakshumati Puja is to seek the blessings of Surya Dev for healthy eyesight, protection and preservation of vision, relief from eye-related difficulties and overall well-being. It is traditionally performed by individuals seeking divine support for weak eyesight, visual discomfort, chronic eye ailments or recovery from eye-related health problems.

The principal ritual of this Puja is the complete recitation of the Chakshushopanishad (Chakshushmati Vidya) 12 times. The sacred verses invoke Surya Dev to protect the eyes, preserve the gift of sight, pacify eye-related suffering and bestow divine illumination. The prayers also seek freedom from darkness and ignorance, guiding the devotee towards the light of knowledge and spiritual awareness.

The Puja further includes Surya Dev Abhishek and Pujan and the recitation of Aditya Hridaya Stotra three times.

The Aditya Hridaya Stotra, taught by Sage Agastya to Bhagwan Shri Rama in the Ramayana, glorifies Surya Dev as the source of life, strength, courage and divine energy. Its recitation is traditionally believed to dispel negativity, strengthen determination and invoke blessings for health, vitality and success.
