Kanya Pujan is observed on the eighth or ninth day of Navratri, known as Ashtami or Navami, and it involves the worship of young girls as living forms of Goddess Durga. This sacred ritual symbolizes reverence for the divine feminine energy and the belief that young girls embody purity, innocence, and the sacred presence of the Devi.
During Kanya Pujan, girls up to the age of ten years (below puberty) are invited and honored. They are seated on a pedestal, their feet are ceremonially washed, Kumkum is applied to their foreheads, and a sacred thread (Kalawa) is tied around their wrists. They are then offered a traditional meal of puri (bread), chana (gram), and halwa (sweet dish) along with small gifts, money, and tokens of respect. Finally, their blessings are sought by touching their feet.
It is believed that the nine girls represent the nine manifestations of Goddess Durga, and performing Kanya Pujan pleases the Divine Mother, who bestows her devotees with strength, prosperity, and grace. Vedic culture regards small girls as embodiments of divinity because of their innocence, unconditional love, and purity.
According to the Devi Bhagwat Purana, worshipping young girls on the ninth day of Navratri blesses the devotee with the Devi’s supreme grace. The Skanda Purana further elaborates on the spiritual significance of each age:
In addition, a small boy is also invited who represents Lord Batuk Bhairav, the guardian of every Shakti Peetha. It is believed that by performing Kanya Pujan, the full fruit of Navratri worship is attained.
At Rudra Centre Puja Services, 9 girls and 1 boy will be invited to our temple premises. Their feet will be washed, Kalawa tied on their wrists, and Kumkum applied. They will be worshipped with aarti and pujan, and offered halwa, puri, and chana, along with gifts such as notebooks, color sketch pens, school bags, dress and cash.
Our priests will perform Kanya Pujan as per Vedic rituals, customized according to your birth details. Please mention your Full name, Current Location, Gotra/Birth details (date, place, time)/Parent’s Name, & Sankalpa (your wish) in the instructions box. This is an individual Puja, where you may include your own name or also the names of your near and dear ones.
