Kanya Pujan is observed on the eighth or ninth day of Navratri, known as "Ashtami" or "Navami," and it involves the worship of young girls as forms of Goddess Durga. This ritual symbolizes the recognition of the divine feminine energy and the belief that young girls are pure and sacred. During Kanya Pujan, girls up to the age of ten years (below the age of puberty) are invited, seated on a pedestal, their feet washed and they are applied Kumkum and a kalawa(sacred thread) is tied around their wrists. They are offered food consisting of poori(a kind of bread), chana(gram) and halwa(sweet dessert), some money and gifts. Finally, their blessings are sought by touching their feet. It is believed that the 9 girls represent the nine manifestation of Goddess Durga and the ritual of Kanya Pujan pleases Goddess Durga who blesses the devotee. In Vedic culture small girls are considered divine-like because of their innocence, unconditional love and purity. As per Devi Bhagwat Purana, worshipping small girls on the ninth day of Navratri blesses a devotee with divine grace of the Devi. According to Skanda Purana, 2-year-old girl represent Kumari, 3-year-old girl - Trimurti, 4-year-old girl - Kalyani, 5-year-old girl - Rohini, 6-year-old girl - Kalika, 7-Year-old girl - Chandika, 8-year-old girl - Shambhavi and 9-year-old girl is considered the form of Maa Durga. A girl of 10 years of age represents Subhadra. During Kanya Pujan, a little boy is also invited who represents Lord Batuk Bhairav, the keeper of every Shaktipeeth. It is believed that by doing Kanya Pujan the full fruits of Navratri worship are attained.
