This is an original and exceptionally rare Dakshinavarti Shankh, also known as Lakshmi Shankh or Valampuri Shankh, sourced from the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka.
What makes this particular specimen extraordinary is its impressive 6-inch size, substantial weight of approximately 423 grams, thick and healthy body, broad rounded formation and beautiful milky-white colour. Dakshinavarti Shankh has been revered for centuries as one of the most auspicious sacred objects in Hindu tradition. It is especially associated with Goddess Mahalakshmi and prosperity and is depicted in association with divine forms including Gaja Lakshmi, Vaishnavi and Goddess Durga.
For a spiritual collector, temple or devotee seeking an exceptional Lakshmi Shankh, a specimen of this size and quality is extremely difficult to obtain.
The word Dakshinavarti means turning towards the right. Unlike the commonly occurring sacred conch, the formation of a Dakshinavarti Shankh follows the opposite orientation.
When held in the prescribed position with its crown pointing upward, its opening and spiral formation identify it as the rare Dakshinavarti or right-turning variety. This unusual natural formation is precisely what makes the Lakshmi Shankh so highly valued.
Traditionally, the clockwise or rightward movement is associated with Dakshina, the auspicious direction, the movement of Pradakshina around a Deity, and the energies of growth, prosperity and divine grace.
One of the most important aspects when purchasing a Dakshinavarti Shankh is correct identification.
Many ordinary right-handed whelk shells are sold in the market under the name Dakshinavarti Shankh. However, simply having an opening on the right does not necessarily make a shell a genuine Lakshmi Shankh.
A true Dakshinavarti Shankh of the traditional sacred conch type has distinctive characteristics:
These structural characteristics help distinguish an authentic Dakshinavarti Shankh from look-alike shells.
Most importantly, the internal formation can be examined through an X-ray, providing an additional means of authentication.
Traditional descriptions associated with the Skanda Purana describe auspicious characteristics of the sacred Shankh, including:
A naturally large, thick-bodied, milky-white specimen possessing these desirable characteristics is especially prized.
The Dakshinavarti Shankh is regarded as a sacred symbol of Mahalakshmi, the divine power of prosperity, abundance, beauty and auspiciousness.
For this reason, it has traditionally been treasured in homes, temples, offices, businesses and places of worship.
It is believed that the presence and worship of a genuine Dakshinavarti Shankh helps invoke:
Traditionally, sacred water such as Gangajal may also be kept in the Shankh and sprinkled around the home or premises as part of purification rituals.
The Shankh and the Sacred Vibration of Om
The Shankh occupies a unique place in Hindu spirituality because of its association with Nada — sacred sound.
Its natural spiral is traditionally connected with the primordial vibration of Om, from which creation is said to emerge.
It is believed that when a Dakshinavarti Shankh is respectfully placed with its opening facing upward and its tail towards the North, its unique natural formation supports an auspicious spiritual vibration in the surrounding environment.
Thus, the Lakshmi Shankh is valued not merely for its rarity, but as a sacred representation of prosperity arising from divine order and harmony.
Genuine Dakshinavarti Shankhs are found only in very limited numbers. Traditionally sourced from regions of the Indian Ocean extending from Myanmar towards Sri Lanka, only a small number of authentic specimens become available. But within this already rare category, large and beautifully developed specimens are considerably rarer.
This particular Shankh measures approximately 6 inches in height, 3 inches in width and weighs an impressive 423 grams.
Its combination of:
exceptional size + substantial weight + thick body + milky colour + broad natural formation + preserved natural skin
places it in a particularly rare category.
A Dakshinavarti Shankh of this size and quality may become available only once or twice in an entire year.
It is therefore suitable not only for sacred worship but also as an important spiritual collectible and heirloom that may be preserved for generations.
Because of the rarity and value of genuine Dakshinavarti Shankhs, authentication is extremely important.
X-ray and other applicable certification will be provided with this Shankh. Each rare specimen is carefully selected and offered individually.
According to traditional belief, worship and respectful placement of the Dakshinavarti Shankh:
Om Panchajanyaya Vidmahe
Padma Garbhaya Dhimahi
Tanno Shankha Prachodayaat
Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Shridhara Karasthaya Payonidhi Jataya Lakshmi Sahodaraya Dakshinavarta Shankhaya Namah.
A Rare Symbol of Mahalakshmi
More than a rare natural conch, the Dakshinavarti Lakshmi Shankh represents the sacred union of purity, prosperity and auspiciousness.
And when nature creates one in such an exceptional size, weight and beautiful formation, it becomes something even rarer—a sacred treasure worthy of worship, preservation and being passed from one generation to the next.
