Panchak means “a group of five Nakshatras or constellations”. Panchak is an inauspicious period of five days when the moon transits through any of the five Nakshatras namely Dhanista, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati. It is believed that any misfortune which happens during this period is repeated five times During this period, no auspicious ceremonies like marriages, graha pravesh, mundan or any major purchases are undertaken. If a person dies during the Panchak period, also known as “Panchak Death” it is believed that 5 members of his family will die within 24 months. 

As per Garuda Purana, Panchak Dosha causes further miseries and problems for the family. Depending upon the day on which the death has occurred Panchak Dosha are classified in five types namely Mrityu Panchak, Rog Panchak, Rajya Panchak, Agni Panchak and Chor Panchak. Panchak Dosha leads to obstacles and problems in the life of family members of the deceased person.

Significance of Panchak Dosha Nivaran Puja for Deceased

Death in Panchak period is considered inauspicious. It is believed that Panchak Dosha leads to possibility of great loss to the family. To eliminate the malefic effects of Panchak Dosha, Panchak Dosha Nivaran Puja is performed. The Puja is done after fifteen days of Panchak death. Panchak Dosha Nivaran Puja is an elaborate Puja in which Five Kalash representing the 5 panchak Nakshatra Dhanishta, Satbhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati are prepared. Pitru Tarpan Pooja is performed and for this Five dolls made of Kusha grass (Darbha) and white cotton are prepared. Prana Prathistapana is done to give life to the dolls. After this they are buried near a natural water body or in soil. Rudrabhishek is performed on a Parad lingam with Rudram namakam chamakam and mahamrityunjaya mantra japa. To calm the planets and remove the malefic effects of Panchak Dosh, Nakshatra Shanti and Navagraha Shanti Pooja is performed. Donation of a pot of sesame seeds in done on behalf of the yajman.
