Samhara Bhairav Puja

Lord Bhairava is a fierce and powerful manifestation of Lord Shiva, representing protection, fearlessness and the destruction of negative forces. Hindu tradition speaks of 64 forms of Bhairava, of which eight principal forms are collectively known as the Ashta Bhairavas. Samhara Bhairava is the eighth of these forms and represents the power of Samhara—dissolution or destruction of that which obstructs one's growth.   

Samhara Bhairava is traditionally depicted in an awe-inspiring form with ten arms carrying various divine weapons and symbols such as the trident, discus, conch, mace and damaru. He is described as having a radiant yellow-orange complexion, brilliant like lightning. His Shakti is Goddess Chandi, his vahana is the dog, and he is traditionally associated with the North-East direction and the planetary energy of Rahu.    

The deeper significance of Samhara Bhairava lies in his power to dissolve negativity. His worship is performed for protection from negative energies, obstacles, fears, harmful influences and adverse karmic patterns. Spiritually, Samhara also represents letting go of old attachments, tendencies and limitations that have completed their purpose, allowing transformation and new growth to take place.

Significance of Samhara Bhairava Puja

Samhara Bhairava Puja is a powerful Vedic worship performed to invoke the protective and transformative grace of Lord Bhairava. The puja is especially recommended when one is facing persistent obstacles, unexplained difficulties, fear, opposition or negative influences.    

Through Sankalpa, mantra japa, abhishek, worship of the Samhara Bhairava Yantra and Homa, prayers are offered for the removal of obstacles and negativity and for protection, wellbeing and progress in life.    

The puja may also be performed with a Sankalpa for prosperity, success, marriage, conception, family wellbeing and spiritual growth.
