To save the world from getting destroyed by Lord Shiva's rage, and with the intension of calming down Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu followed Him and using His Sudarshan Chakra kept cutting the body of Sati. The 51 places where the various parts of Devi Sati's body fell on Earth are considered Shaktipeetha and are important pilgrim places.
