Astha Bhairav Puja invokes the eight principal forms of Lord Bhairav together for protection, strength, fearlessness and transformation. The Ashta Bhairavas are traditionally associated with the eight directions, and their collective worship invokes divine guardianship from every direction. The Puja is especially performed during periods of persistent obstacles, opposition, uncertainty, fear or negative influences, and for the protection and wellbeing of oneself, family, home, workplace and important undertakings.

Lord Bhairav is the fierce and protective manifestation of Lord Shiva and is revered as Kshetrapala—the guardian of sacred spaces. In the Shakta tradition, Bhairav is also intimately connected with the Shakti Peethas: the Goddess as Shakti is traditionally accompanied by a corresponding form of Bhairav, who functions as the guardian of the sacred Peetha. This association expresses the inseparable relationship between Shakti and Shiva and Bhairav's role as protector of divine energy and sacred boundaries.

Traditional accounts describe 64 forms of Bhairav, with eight principal forms—Asitanga, Ruru, Chanda, Krodha, Unmatta, Kapala, Bhishana and Samhara Bhairava. According to the Rudrayamala tradition, these eight Bhairavas govern the eight directions, and each has eight further manifestations, together forming the 64 Bhairavas.
