In Vedic tradition, Amavasya—the day of the new moon—is a time when the sun and moon both withdraw their light from the earth. This absence of luminaries makes the day spiritually sensitive and, according to astrology, less auspicious for new beginnings. When a child is born on Darsh Amavasya (the new moon tithi that arrives every lunar month), it is believed that subtle planetary imbalances and ancestral influences (Pitru dosha) may shadow the birth chart. Elders often say that such children carry immense potential, but they need the protective grace of the Shanti rituals to ensure smooth growth, health, and harmony in life.
To balance these cosmic influences, the Darsh Amavasya Shanti Puja is performed. This is a powerful rite that combines planetary worship, ancestral pacification, and blessings for the newborn. It is not just a ritual—it is the family’s way of lovingly preparing the path of the child so that obstacles are removed and divine support flows through their life journey.
The puja begins with Sankalpa, where the name and details of the child and family are offered into the sacred intention. This is followed by Kalash Sthapana and Panchang Pujan, invoking the five elements and aligning the ceremony with cosmic order. The deities Ganapati, Navagraha, and Kuladevata are invoked to grant strength and protection. Special Pitru Shanti mantras and offerings are performed to honor ancestors, ensuring their blessings flow upon the newborn. A Havan (fire offering) with sacred herbs, ghee, and mantras sanctifies the environment, burns away karmic impurities, and infuses the child’s aura with light and energy. Finally, with the Purna Ahuti (final oblation) and blessings of the priests, the puja concludes with prayers for long life, health, happiness, and prosperity.
