Garuda Puran Paath at Trimbakeshwar

Garuda Puran Paath is traditionally performed following the demise of a family member to pray for the peace, Sadgati and onward journey of the departed soul. It may be performed during the period immediately following death, traditionally from the fourth day until the eleventh day, or subsequently whenever the family wishes to offer prayers for the peace and spiritual progress of a departed loved one.

Garuda Purana is one of the eighteen Mahapuranas and is presented largely as a sacred dialogue between Lord Vishnu and Garuda, the divine king of birds. Of particular significance are Lord Vishnu’s teachings about death and the journey of the soul after leaving the physical body. The text explains Karma, Dharma, life and death, the afterlife, charity, Antim Sanskar and the rites performed by the family for departed souls.

The recitation of Garuda Purana is therefore not merely a ritual for the departed. It offers prayers for their peaceful onward journey while helping the family understand the deeper spiritual meaning of life, death, Karma and the eternal nature of the soul.

Significance of Garuda Puran Paath at Trimbakeshwar

Trimbakeshwar is one of India’s most revered Tirtha Kshetras and its spiritual significance is described in ancient scriptures including the Shiva Purana, Skanda Purana, Padma Purana and Dharma Sindhu. It is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the unique three-faced Shivlingam associated with Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh. 
The sacred Godavari River originates from the Brahmagiri mountains at Trimbak, and the holy Kushavarta Kund is closely associated with ancestral rites and ceremonies for departed souls. 
The entire Trimbak region is revered as a Tirtha Kshetra, a sacred land traditionally considered highly auspicious for the performance of Vedic rites. Garuda Puran Paath, Shradh, Pind Daan, Tarpan and other ceremonies for departed souls are therefore traditionally performed within the Trimbak Kshetra.

Garuda Puran Paath at Trimbakeshwar Procedure | Garuda Puran Paath Vidhi

The ceremony begins with Kirtan and sacred invocations, followed by Guru Vandana, Vishnu Vandana and Shiva Vandana.

Ganesh-Gauri Dhyan and Vishnu Dhyan are then performed, followed by Panchopachar Puja.

The principal ritual is the Garuda Purana Katha Recitation, during which the sacred teachings of the Purana are recited with prayers for the peace and Sadgati of the departed soul.

The ceremony concludes with food and donation to Brahmins.
