Narayan Nagbali is a three-day Hindu ceremony held at Trimbakeshwar, Nashik District, Maharashtra, India. Families conduct the Narayan Nagbali ceremony to release the spirits of family members who died an untimely death or Durmaran.
Death is referred to be untimely or Durmaran in Indian language when it occurs for an improper reason and at an inappropriate age. The following are some of Durmaran's examples:
Narayan Nagbali Pooja consists of two different rituals which are Narayanbali and Nag bali where the word bali means sacrifice. Narayan Bali is a form of offering Bali (sacrifice) for peace of Atma(soul) and involves worship to Supreme Lord Shree Vishnu. The main motive behind these rites is to help the Atma - soul to liberate and transcend, attain Mukti – Moksha.
Second is Nag bali, performed to get rid of sin of killing snake, specially Cobra which is worshipped in India. Detailed description of Narayana Bali puja is described in 40th chapter of the Garuda Purana which is one of the most sacred texts of Sanatan Dharma which describe the cycle of life and death. It says the soul revolves around until the family performs these rites which are also known as pinda pradana.
This puja is for deceased family members whose funeral rites Shraddha Karmas were not performed and/or who were deprived of regular annual ceremonies or for those who had an untimely or accidental death. This elaborate puja includes prayers for 7 generations of deceased ancestors from Father’s side and seven generations of deceased ancestors from Mother ‘s side and, if married, from wife’s maternal side. It is performed once in a lifetime. This is a 3 day puja performed only in Trimbakeshwar.
Narayan Nagbali is one of the main rituals done at Trimbakeshwar. Ancient scriptures that explain different religious rites, mentions that this specific ceremony should be done only at Trimbakeshwar. We can find the references in Skanda Purana and Padma Purana about this tradition. If one is not able to personally visit the Trimbakeshwar temple for the puja, then they can perform this puja online.
All pujas at Trimbakeshwar begin with a sacred Rudrabhishek inside the sanctum of the Jyotirlinga. Owing to the constant influx of devotees from across the globe, the remaining rituals are conducted outside the main temple premises, within the spiritually charged expanse of Trimbak. The entire town is revered as a Tirtha Kshetra, making it auspicious for performing all kinds of Vedic ceremonies.
At Rudra Centre, we are blessed to have our own temple in Trimbakeshwar, just a short walk from the Jyotirlinga. Here, our expert Karmakandi Pundits perform all major Shiv Pujas such as Rudrabhishek, Laghu Rudra, and more. We also conduct Shraddh ceremonies and potent Dosh Nivaran pujas including Gandanta Shanti, Garud Puran Path, Tripindi Shraddh, Narayan Nagbali, and Pitru Dosha Nivaran—each performed with strict adherence to the Vedic scriptures. The Narayan Nagbali Puja is indicated for Problems like Bhoot Pishach Badha, obstacles in Business, drainage of Money, family health Problems, conflicts, education hindrances, marriage problems, accidental Death, unnecessary expenses and health problems. It is also performed to get rid of problems occurred due to curse from father, mother, brother, corpse, wife and other shaps (Pitru shap,Pratashap, Matrushap, Bhatrushap, Patnishap, Matulshap).
The Narayan Bali rites are similar to those of a Hindu cremation, although they are reduced to three days rather than the usual thirteen. If the post-death rites of the one who has had an unnatural death has not been done ritualistically, it continues to remain in the corpse state. Then the subtle-body does not gain momentum and consequently it keeps wandering. Such a subtle-body prevents procreation in its descendants and also torments them in some way or the other. To provide momentum to such a subtle-body, the rite of Narayanbali should be performed. During this ritual, a dummy body composed mostly of wheat dough is employed and vedic mantras are sung to summon the lost spirit in it. Then it is set ablaze with the pyre, allowing the soul to free and transcend. The Nag Bali ceremony involves making a dummy snake body of wheat dough and using mantras the fears, desires and dark energies of the deceased are pulled inside it and then it is sacrificed. This funeral liberates the spirit of these dark forces and pushes it to the other world.
In Shradh rituals, Pind Daan is a sacred offering made to the departed souls in the form of rice balls known as pindas. These pinds are typically made using a mixture of cooked rice, black sesame seeds (til), barley or wheat flour, ghee, and holy water. The pind represents the subtle body (sūkṣma sharīra) of the departed soul and is offered with devotion to aid their journey in the afterlife, grant them peace, and help resolve any lingering karmic attachments.

Please share the following details for the Sankalpa so the puja is offered in your name and for your well-being; no Sankalpa is needed for ancestral pujas.
In this puja, the specific names of ancestors are generally not required. Instead, the ritual is performed collectively for all ancestral souls—particularly those from the father’s lineage (Pitru Loka), mother’s lineage (Matru Loka), and, where relevant, the spouse’s lineage. The purpose of the puja is to offer peace and liberation to any ancestors who may be trapped in an intermediate state due to untimely death, unnatural circumstances, or incomplete last rites, thereby resolving any disturbances they may be causing in the lives of their descendants.
