This magnificent Virat Vishnu Shaligram Murti is carved meticulously on a single piece of Shaligram Shila. Virat means great. The Epic Mahabharata narrates that Lord Krishna (Lord Vsishnu’s Avatar) revealed the Virat Vishnu roop (form) to Arjuna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The story says that Arjuna was in a moral dilemma and laid down His weapons in front of Shri Krishna, saying that He would not be able to kill His uncles and brothers (the Kauravas) standing in the opposition. Lord Krishna, during His discourse to Arjuna, about life and death, revealed His Virat Vishnu roop, His Universal cosmic form, which comprised of the heads of deities, Sages, Rishis, and on the Lord’s body was reflected the Kaurava dynasty, the Pandavas and other beings. The Virat Vishnu roop expanded endlessly as described in Mahabharata. Seeing this divine vision, Arjuna was not only overwhelmed but was engulfed with fear. Bowing down, Arjuna requested the Lord to come back to His normal form of the four handed, compassionate Shri Krishna. The Virat Vishnu roop convinced Arjuna that His hesitation to fight the battle against His own relatives and brothers was baseless as the divine Lord Krishna/Vishnu had already done everything required. With confidence and knowing that He had the divine support of His friend and charioteer, Lord Krishna, Arjuna fought the battle of Kurukshetra.
The Shaligram Shila represents Lord Vishnu and is reverently worshipped by devotees. The Virat Vishnu Shaligram murti is very powerful and is skilfully hand crafted featuring the full form of Lord Vishnu standing on a Lotus, in the centre of the idol, with His lowest right hand raised in the Abhaya mudra, assuring His blessings and protection to devotees. On both sides of Lord Vishnu’s head are the heads of other deities, like Lord Shiva, Ganesh, Hanuman, Krishna and other deities of the Hindu pantheon. There are approximately ten hands on each side, holding various weapons of the deities, including the Sudarshan Chakra and Gada of Lord Vishnu. The multi-hood of the celestial Snake of Lord Vishnu, Sheshnag has been beautifully sculpted, fanned over all the heads of Virat Vishnu roop idol.
The Shaligram shila is a self-manifested stone found in the beds and banks of Kali Gandaki river, Nepal, and can be worshipped without doing Pranprathista (consecration). Keeping the Shaligram at home clears Vastu dosha and its high vibration replaces negative energies with positive ones and shields the dwelling. Worshipping the sacred Shaligram bestows material and spiritual wealth, good health, righteous living, worldly comforts, spiritual augmentation, protection, success, peace, all round happiness and more. Worshipping Lord Vishnu sincerely absolves sins of devotees and leads to Moksha.
The Shaligram shila is worshipped by performing the sacred bathing, Abhishek, with water and Tulsi leaves and a mixture of Cow Milk(without boiling), Curd, Ghee, Honey, Sugar.
This auspicious Virat Vishnu Shaligram murti is a valuable addition to your Puja Alter.
