Elaichi Mala:

Cardamom popularly known as Elaichi is native spice of India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Indonesia. Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is a spice that belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and holds immense significance in traditions. It also has many medicinal values and is one of the most popular spices. Cardamom pods are oval and their outer skin is green in colour and has small black or brown aromatic seeds. Cardamom is considered as one of the oldest spices in the world and has been used for more than 4,000 years. Elaichi/ Cardamom have numerous medicinal and spiritual properties. Cardamom holds rich religious and spiritual significance. Offering garlands made of cardamom/ elaichi is an age old ritual which is being practiced even today. A ritual of offering Cardamom garlands (Elaichi Mala) to Lord Hayagrivar has been practiced since ancient times by the devotees. Lord Hayagrivar is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is worshipped as the god of knowledge and wisdom. According to the iconography Lord Hayagrivar has a human body and a horse head. He is brilliant white in colour, is dressed in white and is seated on a white lotus. He is known as the Lord of knowledge/studies and the One who has the greatest Memory. Offering a garland made of Elaichi on Thursday is said to appease Lord Hayagrivar and He blesses the worshippers with enhanced knowledge, sharp memory and wit. The Thiruvandhipuram temple is one of the most important temples of Lord Hayagrivar.
