    About Tulsi Mala

    Tulsi Mala:

    Tulsi (Basil) is one of the most revered plants in Hinduism. This sacred plant is worshipped as Goddess Tulsi by the Hindus. People usually grow the Tulsi plant in the front courtyard, and in modern day apartments the Tulsi plant is kept in the balcony of the house. Planting a basil tree in the Brahmasthan (the exact centre of the house) of your dwelling is believed to radiate divinity and spreads positive energy in the house and surrounding. Apart from offering spiritual benefits the Tulsi plant is also known for its medicinal benefits. The Tulsi plant finds its mentions in the Ayurveda, Garuda Purana and other Holy scriptures and is known for its high medicinal value. The beads of Tulsi are also used to make 'mala' which can be worn as well as used for chanting mantras. The Tulsi mala is made of 108 beads which are strung in silk thread with knots. When used as a japamala, it has 108 beads plus one which hangs as sumeru. The 108 beads refer to chanting 108 names of a deity or chanting a mantra 108 times. The extra bead is known as the Sumeru bead. This Sumeru bead is a little bigger than the others in the mala.

    Tulsi is dear to Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna and has its mention in the sacred Garuda Purana. It is believed that the wearer of the Tulsi bead mala is blessed abundantly. According to the Skanda Purana, the wearer of the Tulsi mala is freed from all the sins. The white coloured beads are used by Hindus while the black coloured beads are used by Buddhists. According to Vishnu Dharmaottara, Lord Vishnu Himself said that anyone who wears Tulsi mala, even if he is unclean, or of bad character, will surely attain the Lord himself.
