The universe demonstrates its intelligence through the medicinal and sacred plants that are found in Nature. The scientific name for the Amla plant is the Phyllanthus Embilca, it is also known as Amalka in Hindi and Amalaki in Sanskrit. The meaning of the word Amalaki means ‘the sustainer’ or ‘the fruit where the goddess of prosperity presides’. The Goddess of wealth, Goddess Lakshmi is associated with the Amla tree and in the month of Marga Shirsha which between November/December, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped with the leaves of this divine Amla tree.
Amla is known as Indian gooseberry in English and its tree is generally small having leaves which are of leathery texture. The fruits that this tree bears is round, fleshy and pale green in colour. The Amla fruit is of the size of a lemon and has a sour, astringent and sweet taste. This fruit is available in plenty from the month of January to April. Since ancient times the Amla tree is worshipped as the ‘Earth Mother’ in India as the Amla fruit is believed to be wholesome and is considered to be nursing humankind.
According to a legend Once there was a poor woman who offered the only Amla fruit she had to Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Looking at this, Adi Guru Shankaracharya was touched and felt sorry for the woman and prayed to Goddess Lakshmi by singing the Kanakadhara Stotram. Pleased by His prayers Goddess Lakshmi blessed and bestowed the house by showering golden Amlas in the form of rains.
