Ann means food and Daan means donation, and thus the act of offering food to the poor and needy is known as Ann Daan. In our scriptures, Ann Daan is celebrated as Shrestha Daan, the highest and most noble form of giving. It is said that as you give, so shall you receive; therefore, by donating food to someone in need, one ensures that there will never be a shortage of food in one’s own life. Adi Shankaracharya, in his stotram praising Goddess Annapurna—the Goddess of food and nourishment—has emphasized that donating grains to the deserving is more virtuous than donating gold, wealth, or even elephants. It is also believed that in the present age of Kali Yuga, donating food is the best way to please Lord Krishna and offer true service to Him.
Ann Daan refers specifically to the donation of food or food grains. A well-known saying in Hindu tradition is “Anna Daanam Maha Daanam,” which means that donating food is the greatest gift in the world. Elders in our culture have always advised giving food to the hungry instead of merely giving money, as food sustains life directly. Nature itself is our greatest teacher of giving—the sun gives its light, flowers share their fragrance, trees offer their fruits, and rivers flow with water. Yet, none of these lose what they give. Similarly, charity given with a pure heart comes back manifold, as if returning to us with many hands.
At Rudra Centre Puja Services, during Ann Daan, we ensure that the chosen amount of grains is respectfully distributed to needy families in slums and underprivileged communities, fulfilling not just their hunger but also the spirit of selfless service.
