Goddess Kamakshi Puja at the Kamakshi Amman Temple

Goddess Kamakshi Devi or Kamakshi Amman as Her devotees refer to Her as, is a manifestation of Maa Parvati or Goddess Shakti. Ka means Goddess Saraswati, Ma means Goddess Lakshmi and Akshi means eyes. Thus the Sanskrit word Kamakshi means the one who has eyes of Goddess Saraswati and Lakshmi. She is an aspect of Goddess Tripurasundari Devi. 

The Kamakshi Amman Temple at Kanchipuram is the grandest and most significant temple dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi. She is also worshipped at the Meenakshi temple at Madurai and Visalakshi temple at Varanasi. In the Kamakshi Amman Temple the Goddess is depicted seated in the Padmasana asana, holding a sugarcane bow and bunch of five flowers in the lower two of Her arms and apasha and an ankusha in her upper two arms. As per scriptures Kamakshi Devi fulfils the devotees’ wishes with just one look. Goddess Kamakshi Devi is primarily worshipped for peace, prosperity, love and relationships. 

Legend goes that once Asura Bandashura with the help of a boon from Lord Brahma defeated all Gods and drove them out of heavens. The Gods asked Lord Shiva for help, Lord Shiva stated only Goddess Tripurasundari Devi who has taken an avatar as Kamakshi Devi at Kanchipuram can defeat the asura. All the Gods visited Kanchipuram and worshipped Goddess Tripurasundari Devi and she was pleased and she took Her ferocious form and slayed Bandashura. But even after killing Bandashura, she didn’t calm down. All the Gods were terrified and again prayed to Her and then she took the form of Goddess Kamakshi Devi, a lovely young girl, ornamented with gold jewelry. All Gods prayed to Her to bless them and stay in the said form in Kanchipuram to which the Goddess agreed. Goddess Kamakshi Devi worshipped Lord Shiva under a mango tree with utmost devotion and married Him and had Him as Her consort.
