Maa Chhinnamasta is the sixth of the Das Mahavidyas and one of the most profound and symbolic forms of Adi Shakti. She is depicted having severed Her own head while streams of blood nourish Herself and Her two attendants. Though startling in appearance, Her form carries a deep spiritual teaching about life-force, sacrifice, desire and transcendence of the ego.
She is often depicted standing upon Kama and Rati, representing the powerful force of desire and creation. She does not just reject this energy but stands above it, symbolising mastery over desire rather than suppression of life itself.
Her self-decapitated form represents the cutting of identification with the limited ego. At the same time, the streams flowing from Her body reveal Shakti as the life-force that continuously gives, sustains and renews existence.
Maa Chhinnamasta is traditionally worshipped for courage, transformation, self-mastery and the strength to transcend powerful attachments and inner limitations.
Maa Chhinnamasta reveals the paradox that life is sustained through continuous giving and transformation. Every moment something ends so that something new can arise.
Her severed head represents consciousness freed from domination by the ego and compulsive thought. Her position above Kama and Rati signifies that desire is a powerful force of Shakti, but consciousness need not become its servant. Her teaching is not the destruction of life-force, but mastery of it. When desire is governed by awareness, the same energy that binds can become a force for awakening.
