Maa Kali Puja and Yajna

Maa Kali is the first of the Das Mahavidyas and one of the most profound manifestations of Adi Shakti. Her name arises from Kala, meaning Time. She represents the power that exists beyond time and ultimately dissolves everything that is temporary, including fear, attachment and the limitations of the ego.

Maa Kali is depicted with a dark complexion, dishevelled hair and a garland of severed heads, standing upon Lord Shiva. Though Her appearance is fierce, Her deeper nature is that of the Divine Mother who liberates Her devotees from ignorance. Her darkness represents the infinite reality from which creation arises and into which it ultimately dissolves.

Her sword symbolises Jnana, the knowledge that cuts through ignorance and false identification. The severed head represents the dissolution of ego. Her garland of heads is traditionally understood to carry deeper associations with sound, letters and manifested creation. Shiva lying beneath Her represents pure consciousness, while Kali is Shakti, the dynamic power through which creation, transformation and dissolution take place.

Maa Kali is therefore not only a Goddess of destruction. She is the power of transformation that removes what is false so that what is eternal may be realised. Her worship is traditionally undertaken for protection, courage, spiritual strength and freedom from fear, negativity and limiting attachments.

In certain astrological traditions, Maa Kali is associated with Saturn (Shani), representing time, discipline, karmic lessons, detachment and transformation.

Esoteric Significance of Maa Kali

Maa Kali confronts the seeker with one of the deepest truths of spiritual life: everything that has a beginning in time must eventually change or dissolve. What creates suffering is often not change itself, but our attachment to what is changing. Kali cuts through this attachment. Her sword is the power of awareness that separates the eternal from the temporary, while Her fierce form destroys the illusion that the ego is our true identity.

At the deepest level, Kali represents the dissolution of the limited “I” into the vastness of consciousness. She does not destroy the true Self. She destroys that which prevents us from recognising it.
