The sixth day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Katyayani, the sixth form of Navdurga. She is one of the powerful warrior manifestations of Maa Durga and represents courage, righteous action and the destruction of forces that obstruct Dharma.
According to sacred tradition, the great sage Katyayana performed intense penance with the desire that the Divine Mother be born as his daughter. Pleased with his devotion, the Goddess manifested as Katyayani. She later arose in Her warrior form to destroy the powerful demon Mahishasura.
Maa Katyayani embodies decisive Shakti—the power that no longer merely prepares for action but rises to confront and remove obstacles. Her form teaches the seeker to bring courage, discernment and righteous action together. She is depicted riding a lion, radiating strength and fearlessness. Her weapons represent the Divine power that destroys ignorance and protects Dharma, while Her blessing hand assures refuge and protection to devotees.
In the chakra-based understanding of Navdurga worship, the sixth day is associated with the Ajna Chakra, or Third Eye Chakra. Ajna represents perception, clarity, discernment and conscious direction.
Meditating upon Ajna Chakra while worshipping Maa Katyayani signifies moving beyond impulsive action towards action born from clarity. The seeker learns to see, discern and consciously choose before acting.
“Om Hreem Shreem Katyayanyai Namah”
Meaning: Om is a universal sound, the word Hreem is one syllable sound which is associated to Goddess Bhuvaneshwari who is known to be an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. The word ‘Shreem’ has Sanskrit origin which signify ‘Sri’ and is the seed mantra of Goddess Lakshmi. It symbolizes wealth and prosperity, while the word ‘Namah’ serves as a Salutation.
