Maa Shailputri Puja and Homa

The first day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Shailputri, the first form of Navdurga. Her name means “Daughter of the Mountain”—Shail meaning mountain and Putri meaning daughter. She is the daughter of Himavan, the king of the Himalayas, and is regarded as the manifestation of Maa Parvati.

In Her previous birth, She was Devi Sati, daughter of Daksha Prajapati and consort of Lord Shiva. After relinquishing Her body during Daksha Yajna, She was reborn as the daughter of the Himalayas and came to be known as Shailputri. Maa Shailputri represents steadfastness, purity, strength and the beginning of the spiritual journey. Just as a mountain stands firmly rooted and unmoved, Her worship inspires the devotee to establish a strong foundation before progressing towards higher consciousness.

She is depicted riding Nandi, the sacred bull, holding a Trishul in Her right hand and a lotus in Her left. The crescent moon adorns Her forehead. Her serene yet powerful form represents the harmonious union of strength and purity. Worship of Maa Shailputri marks the sacred beginning of Navratri and invokes Her blessings for stability, courage and spiritual grounding.

Maa Shailputri and Muladhara Chakra

In the chakra-based understanding of Navdurga worship, the first day of Navratri is associated with the Muladhara Chakra, or Root Chakra. Muladhara represents our foundation, stability and connection with the physical world. 
Meditating upon Muladhara Chakra while worshipping Maa Shailputri signifies becoming firmly rooted within oneself. It is the beginning of the inner journey, where the seeker establishes stability before the ascent of consciousness towards the higher chakras.
