Maa Skandamata Puja and Homa

The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Skandamata, the fifth form of Navdurga. She is the divine mother of Lord Skanda, also known as Kartikeya or Kumara, the commander of the celestial forces.

According to sacred tradition, when the powerful demon Tarakasura oppressed the Devas and disturbed the balance of the worlds, Lord Kartikeya arose to vanquish him and restore Dharma. As the mother of this divine warrior, Maa Parvati came to be revered as Skandamata—“Mother of Skanda.”

Maa Skandamata embodies the sublime qualities of divine motherhood—compassion, protection, patience and nurturing strength. As the mother of the divine warrior Skanda, She represents the Shakti that nurtures, protects and prepares the devotee to face life's challenges with courage and wisdom.

She is depicted with four arms, carrying lotus flowers in Her two upper hands while holding the infant Skanda upon Her lap. She is often shown seated upon a lotus and is therefore also revered as Padmasana Devi. Her vahana is the lion,

symbolising courage and divine strength.

Worship of Maa Skandamata invokes the grace of both the Divine Mother and Lord Kartikeya, as it is believed that one who worships the Mother also receives the blessings of Her divine son.

Maa Skandamata and Vishuddha Chakra

In the chakra-based understanding of Navdurga worship, the fifth day of Navratri is associated with the Vishuddha Chakra, or Throat Chakra. The word “Vishuddha” signifies purification. At this stage of the inner journey, the seeker moves towards greater purity of thought, expression and intention.

Meditating upon the Vishuddha Chakra while worshipping Maa Skandamata signifies the purification of inner disturbances and worldly impressions, enabling the devotee to move towards greater clarity, truth and spiritual awareness.
