Maa Tara is the second of the Das Mahavidyas and represents the compassionate power of the Divine Mother who guides the seeker across fear, uncertainty and the limitations of worldly existence. The name Tara comes from the Sanskrit root meaning “to cross,” and She is revered as the Shakti who carries the devotee across difficulties towards wisdom and liberation.
Maa Tara is generally depicted with a deep blue complexion and a powerful form. Although Her appearance can resemble Maa Kali, Tara embodies the protective and guiding aspect of Divine Wisdom. She is the Mother who remains present even in moments of darkness, helping the seeker discover the wisdom necessary to move through them.
In Tantric understanding, Tara is also associated with sacred sound, Mantra Shakti and the power through which knowledge is revealed. Her worship is traditionally undertaken for protection, wisdom, spiritual guidance and the strength to overcome difficult circumstances.
In certain astrological traditions, Maa Tara is associated with Jupiter (Guru), the planet connected with wisdom, knowledge, guidance and spiritual understanding.
Maa Tara represents the wisdom that carries consciousness from limitation to freedom. Difficulties often appear as obstacles, but Tara teaches the seeker how to cross them rather than remain bound by them.
She is the guiding voice within consciousness that remains present even when the path ahead cannot be clearly seen. Her grace represents trust, wisdom and the inner knowledge that enables us to cross the ocean of fear and ignorance.
