About Mahagauri Mata:

Mahagauri Mata is worshipped on Gauri Vrat which is the Navratri 8th day pooja . Ashtami pooja/puja on 8th. day of Durga puja is considered as Maha Pooja during Navratri. The name Mahagauri means the One who is pristine White in complexion and is often compared with the Conch. The pure and extremely beautiful Mahagauri Mata glows like a White Pearl. Mahagauri Mata epitomizes purity, peace and endurance. Mahagauri Mata has the power to fulfil all the desires. She is represented with four arms seated on a White Vrishabha (Bull). Her upper left hand holds Trishul (trident), lower right hand carries Damru (hand drum) and out of the other two hands, one is in the Abhaya mudra which is blessings of protection from all fears and dangers and the other hand is in the Varada mudra which is the assurance of blessings of all good things. Mahagauri Mata is usually depicted wearing a White Saree. Mahagauri Mata governs all nine planets.

Mythology says that when Goddess Parvati had performed severe penance and austerity to obtain Lord Shiva as Her husband, the ordeal which the Divine Mother took on Herself caused Her body colour to turn dark. When Lord Shiva finally accepted Her great devotion, He washed Her body with pure water of Ganga(Ganges River) which flows from His matted hair. That made her body completely Gour, i.e. White. Maa Parvati became prominent with the name 'Gauri' and since She is consort of Mahadev, the epithet of Mahagauri was given to Her.Another version of the legend says that Lord Shiva converted Maa Parvati's skin to a dark complexion, when the Divine Mother took on Her manifestation to kill the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha. However, Maa Parvati was offended at Her complexion change and prayed to Lord Brahma to regain Her original complexion. Lord Brahma was appeased and she was blessed with Her Gour complexion once more.

All the Gods and Sages worship this form of the goddess by chanting“Sarva-mangala-mangalye Shive sarvartha-sadhike, Sharanye Tryambake Gauri Narayani namostute”.
