What is Surya Grahan Dosha?

In Vedic astrology, the Sun (Surya) represents the Atma (inner self), vitality, confidence, authority, recognition, leadership and father. Rahu and Ketu are Chhaya Grahas (shadow planets) traditionally associated with eclipses. 
When Rahu or Ketu conjuncts the Sun in the birth chart, it forms Surya Grahan Dosha or Grahan Yoga. Like an eclipse obscures the Sun's light, this conjunction is said to affect the positive qualities of Surya, creating challenges related to confidence, vitality, recognition, authority and direction in life.  
The intensity of the Dosha depends upon the planetary strength, house and sign placement, aspects and the overall birth chart.

Surya Grahan Dosha with Rahu
