Tripindi Shradh Puja at Trimbakeshwar

Tripindi Shradh, also known as Kamya Shradh, is conducted for all known, unknown and forgotten ancestors and departed souls within a family lineage who may be trapped in one of the three realms—Patala Loka, Bhu Loka or Antariksha Loka—for different reasons.

These may include unfulfilled desires or cravings, unresolved karmic obligations, premature death, or cases where Shradh was not performed for three consecutive years or was not completed at Gaya, the holy city. Tripindi Shradh is a one-time ritual performed to assist such departed souls, offer them peace and help remove the negative effects associated with unfulfilled ancestral obligations.

While both Shradh and Tripindi Shradh are performed to honour departed souls, Tripindi Shradh is a One time ritual specifically performed for ancestors who may remain unsatisfied, troubled or unable to progress on their onward journey.

The Puja comprises sacred rites, offerings, Tarpan, Pind Daan, mantra japa and other rituals intended to provide spiritual nourishment to the departed souls, cleanse unresolved karmic burdens and assist them in attaining peace and moving forward on their journey.

In Tripindi Shradh, three pindas are prepared using sacred ingredients such as barley, rice and sesame seeds and placed upon darbha grass. The offerings are made through Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, representing the three Guna.. Rajas, Sattva and Tamas.

Tripindi Shradh is traditionally performed at sacred Tirtha Kshetras associated with liberation and ancestral rites, such as Gaya, Varanasi, Haridwar, Trimbakeshwar and Allahabad. Trimbakeshwar holds special significance as it is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The presence of the sacred Godavari River, which originates from the Brahmagiri mountains here, further adds to the spiritual significance of performing ancestral rituals at this holy place.

This Puja is performed for all known, unknown and forgotten ancestors from one’s paternal and maternal lineage and, where applicable, the spouse’s family lineage. It is performed with the intention of freeing departed souls from unresolved karmic bonds and helping the family become free from ancestral promises, curses and obligations.

Significance of Tripindi Shradh Puja at Trimbakeshwar

The ancient scripture Dharma Sindhu describes the significance of the holy land of Trimbakeshwar for performing religious rites intended for the pacification of departed souls. The Skanda Purana and Padma Purana also describe the sacred importance of this region for spiritual and ancestral rites.

The Trimbakeshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is renowned for its three-faced Shivlingam representing Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh (Shiva). The temple complex also includes deities such as Gangadevi, Jaleswara, Rameswara, Gautameswara, Kedarnatha, Rama, Krishna, Parashurama and Lakshmi Narayana. Due to the divine presence of the Trinity and other deities, Trimbakeshwar is regarded as an exceptionally sacred Kshetra.

The temple also has monasteries of saints and a sacred well known as Amritavarshini. Near the Trimbakeshwar Temple is the holy Kushavarta Kund, where certain rituals connected with ancestral ceremonies are traditionally performed.

The rituals are conducted outside the main temple premises, within the spiritually significant expanse of Trimbak. The entire town is revered as a Tirtha Kshetra, making it auspicious for performing different Vedic ceremonies.

The Puja is believed to help alleviate problems arising due to Pitru-related afflictions and bring greater harmony and peace within the family.

It is also traditionally performed with prayers for relief from physical and mental difficulties, harmony in married and personal life, professional growth, success in business and career, relief from financial difficulties, and removal of obstacles related to marriage and conception.

Significance of Pind Daan in Tripindi Shradh

In Shradh rituals, Pind Daan is a sacred offering made to departed souls in the form of pindas. These are traditionally prepared using ingredients such as cooked rice, black sesame seeds (til), barley or wheat flour, ghee and holy water.

The pinda represents the subtle body (Sukshma Sharira) of the departed soul and is offered with devotion to spiritually nourish the departed, aid their onward journey, grant them peace and help resolve lingering karmic attachments.

In Tripindi Shradh, three Pind offerings (Pind Daan) are made:

• One for the paternal side (Pitru Paksha) of the Yajaman, the person in whose name the ritual is performed.
• One for the maternal side.
• One for the in-laws’ side (Sasu-Sasur Paksha), where applicable.

Through these offerings, prayers are made for ancestors who may be unable to progress because of unfulfilled rituals, unresolved karmas or other causes.

Benefits of Tripindi Shradh Puja at Trimbakeshwar

Tripindi Shradh Puja is traditionally performed with prayers for peace and liberation of departed ancestors. It is said to help bring peace and harmony within family relationships and alleviate difficulties associated with Pitru-related afflictions.

The Puja is also performed with prayers for relief from physical and mental difficulties, financial losses and recurring obstacles in life. Devotees seek blessings for success in business, profession and career, peace of mind, harmonious relationships and the removal of impediments to marriage.

Couples facing difficulties in conceiving may also perform the Puja while praying for progeny. The ritual is additionally associated with prayers for protection from premature and unnatural death.

ॐ देवताभ्यः पितृभ्यश्च महायोगिभ्य एव च।
नमः स्वधायै स्वाहायै नित्यमेव नमो नमः॥

Meaning

Pitrus are the ancestors or departed souls. This mantra pays homage to the deities, ancestors and enlightened Yogis while offering reverence to the sacred energies represented by Swadha and Swaha.

Tripindi Shradh Puja at Trimbakeshwar Procedure | Tripindi Shradh Puja Vidhi

The Tripindi Shradh Puja is performed through an elaborate sequence of Vedic rituals by experienced Karmakandi Pundits.

The Puja includes:

Prithvi Pujan, Shankh Pujan, Deep Pujan, Varun Pujan, Swasti Vachan and Sankalpa, followed by Panchang Pujan comprising Gauri Ganesh Pujan, Punyah Vachan, Shodash Matrika Pujan, Navgraha Sthapana and Nandi Shradh.

This is followed by Kalash Pujan, Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh Shodashopachar Pujan, Vishnu Suktam recitation, Brahma Suktam recitation, Rudra Suktam recitation, Ladoo Gopal Pujan, Mahavishnu Tarpan and Pitru Tarpan.

Three Pind Daan offerings are then made, followed by Pitru Mantra Japa 1,100 times and Pind Visarjan. The ceremony concludes with donations to Brahmins and Panchgras—feeding cows, dogs, crows and the poor.
