Vat Savitri is a Hindi name which is an amalgamation of two words 'Vat' and 'Savitri'. Vat means Banyan Tree and Savitri means a form of 'Devi'. Vata Savitri Amavasya Vrat is observed by married women. According to the Skand Puran and the Bhavishyottar Puran, this fast is performed every Poornima (Full Moon) of Shukla Paksha in Jyeshtha (June) month of Hindu calendar. Vishnu devotees consider performing this fast is very auspicious and blessed. Following Skand Puran and Bhavishyottar Puran, Vat Savitri Vrat in this year will be accomplished. This fast is very fruitful to all those ladies who perform it. Vat Savitri Vrat bestows good fortune, children and fulfills other wishes of ladies.
Prayers and pujas are dedicated to Vat Vriksha (Banyan Tree) and Savitri. On this auspicious day, all the married women tie sacred threads around the bark of the banyan tree and worship the tree for the longitivity and prosperous life of their husbands. Married women observe Vat Savitri puja for the well-being of their husbands and for a happy family life.
Vat rituals originate from the famous Savitri Satyavan legend in the Mahabharata. As per the Hindu mythology, Banyan tree reflects existence of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Lord Brahma lives in the root of the tree. In the middle, Lord Vishnu lives and Lord Mahesh (Shiva) lives in the top part of this tree. Therefore, sitting under shadow of this tree and listening to the legends related to Vat Savitri fast is abundantly fruitful and truly fulfills all wishes.
