What is Nirakar (Faceless) or 0 Mukhi Rudraksha?

In Sanskrit, 'Nirakar' means 'formless” without a clear or visible shape.
When people refer to a Nirakar Rudraksha , they are talking about Rudraksha beads that do not show prominent Mukhi lines (the natural grooves) on their surface. It is also popular known as Zero Mukhi or 0 Mukhi or Faceless Rudraksha

• These beads grow naturally on Rudraksha trees but may appear smooth, irregular, or have very faint or incomplete Mukhi lines.
• Sometimes, overuse of fertilizers, unnatural farming methods, or genetic factors cause the beads to grow bulbous and smooth , making the natural Mukhi markings almost invisible.
• However, inside the bead , the sacred natural structure — the number of internal compartments (lokas) — remains intact.
• So, a bead that looks like a '0 Mukhi' from the outside could still be a 4 Mukhi, 5 Mukhi, or 6 Mukhi internally.
• If you carefully observe the mouth (top) or tail (bottom) of such beads, you can often see the openings of the Mukhi lines, where the ridges emerge but quickly merge or close. In most cases, these beads are 5 Mukhi or 6 Mukhi, which is why they are often round in shape and wrongly sold as 'Nirakar' Rudrakshas.

Thus, while they may appear smooth or formless externally, these beads are not truly Nirakar — they belong to a proper Mukhi category based on their inner structure.
Note: There is no such thing as a naturally occurring 0 Mukhi Rudraksha.
Every Rudraksha bead created by nature has Mukhis — whether clearly seen outside or hidden inside.

The Shiva Purana also says:
' Chinna, Bhagna, Vikritani Rudrakshani Parityajet '
Translation: Broken, cracked, or deformed Rudraksha should be avoided
Thus, spiritually speaking, a bead without clear Mukhis or with incomplete structure is not ideal for wearing or worship.
