Lord Dhanvantari the father of Ayurveda appeared on the day of Dhanteras carrying a pot of amrit (nectar) in his hand. He is the doctor of Gods of all the three worlds and is also known as the manifestation of Lord Vishnu. Dhanvantri Puja & Yajna is performed on Dhanvantari Trayodashi which is celebrated two days before Diwali Puja during Trayodashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha. It marks the appearance of Lord Vishnu in His divine incarnation of Lord Dhanvantari, the teacher and the father of Ayurveda.
