About Mahalakshmi Mata | Significance of Mahalaxmi puja

Goddess Mahalakshmi is one of the prime Goddesses in Hinduism. She is the consort of Lord Vishnu. She is addressed as ‘Sri’ or ‘Shri’ which means the auspicious one. Mahalakshmi is known for having eight forms which is known as ‘Ashtalakshmi’. All Her eight forms represent eight different facets of Her divine grace. She is associated with prosperity, wealth, riches, fortune and abundance. She is endowed with six auspicious qualities or gunas. Whenever Vishnu descends on earth as Rama and Krishna, She accompanies Him as Sita and Rukmani. Lakshmi is depicted wearing a red saree on Lotus with an owl as her vehicle, She is a symbol of fortune, self-knowledge and spiritual liberation.

Her four hands represent the four goals of human life which are Dharma (Righteousness), Artha (Materialism), Kama (Desires) and Moksha (Liberation). She emerged during the Sagar Manthan (Churning of the Milky Ocean). She is worshipped for blessings of fertility, fortune, purity, beauty, power, generosity, auspiciousness, grace, grandeur, bliss and riches. The word Lakshmi is derived from the Sanskrit word Lakshya, meaning goal or aim. Goddess Lakshmi bestows the knowledge and understanding to fulfill all the aims of life and attain success.
