Shravan Mahina, or Sawan Month or Shravan Maas is one of the holiest months in a traditional Hindu calendar and is considered highly auspicious for spiritual practices and worship. The term "Shravan" refers to the fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar and falls in July and August. All, Mondays or Somvars of Shravan month are specially observed with austerity as these days are replete with Lord Shiva’s blessings. In 2024 this period starts on 22nd July and ends on 12 August. The name "Shravan" is derived from the Sanskrit word for "hearing" or "listening," highlighting the importance of spiritual learning and divine connection during this time. In this period the Moon transits Shravan Nakshatra, which is considered auspicious for seeking divine knowledge and blessings.
There are several stories that highlight why this is the most favourite month of Lord Shiva. Holy books state that when the Sanat Kumaras asked Lord Shiva why the month of Shravan is dear to Him, he revealed that Ma Parvati fasted hard during this month to marry Him making it special to Him. It was also in Shravan month that Lord Shiva drank the halahal poison which turned His throat blue. To cool Him down, He was offered water and holy liquids by the Devas. Thus, the significance of offering Abhisheka to Lord Shiva in this month was understood.

Another narrative is that Markandeya, the son of Markandu Rishi, received the grace of Shiva in the month of Shravan for longevity as He composed the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. Thus, this month devotees fast to receive good health throughout the year.

Also it is said that in this month, Lord Shiva visits His in-laws place and is welcomed with offerings. Thus it is the best time to receive His benevolent grace.

This is the part of the 4 months of Shravan, Badho, Ashwin and Kartik, when Lord Vishnu retires in Yognidra and Lord Shiva takes over the duty of taking care of the creation. Shiva devotees offer Abhishekam (ritual bathing) to Lord Shiva and pray to Him and meditate to get His blessings for mitigating their karma and cleansing and uplifting the soul. It is said that the one who worships Lord Shiva in the month of holy Shravan is freed from all bondages is propelled on the path of self-realisation. He enjoys health, harmony and success in all spheres of life.

In this Maha Puja, Lord Shiva would be worshipped with chants of Rudram Namakam Chamakam, Rudrasuktam, Shivashtakam, Nirvanashtakam, Shiva Stotras, and Stutis.
