About Lord Sudarshana | Significance of Sudarshan Homa
Lord Sudarshan is one of the fiercest and most powerful weapons of Lord Vishnu which He wears on the index finger of His right hand. The divine Sudarshana Chakra is said to represent two rows having10 million spikes that move in opposite directions. These spikes have serrated edges and swiftly cuts through any object that meets it. The word ‘Sudarshana’ is a Sanskrit word where ‘SU’ refers to correct or auspicious and ‘Darshana’ refers to vision. Sudarshana Chakra is the personification of the right intent of one’s soul. The Puranas state that the Sudarshana Chakra is the most powerful weapon that can defeat the most powerful asuras, rashasas and vikrutatma who cause disturbance in law, order, conservation and peace of the universe.
According to the legend of Sudarshana Chakra, a long time ago, the asuras started torturing the God and their atrocities kept on increasing, this is when all the Gods went to Lord Vishnu to seek His help. The strength of asuras had increased and so had their power, Lord Vishnu knew that only Lord Shiva could help them all from this precarious situation. This is when, Lord Vishnu went up to Lord Shiva and started meditating over Him to appease Him and to gain Shiva’s help. Years later, the Lord was appeased and gifted Lord Vishnu, the Sudarshan Chakra assuring Him that this weapon had the power to kill all the enemies. Also, during the time of Samudra Manthan (churning of the milky ocean), Lord Vishnu made use of the Sudarshan chakra to cut the demon Swarbanu who then became Rahu and Ketu.
The objective of performing the Sudharshana homa is to evoke the divine Lord Sudarshan and to seek His blessings in order to fulfil the desires which are pure in intent. It is said that the Sudarshana Chakra is not thrown. With will-power it is sent and it returns back to the sender only after completing the task. Thus, when a devotee performs Sudharshana homa with a pure intent, Lord Sudarshana works towards fulfilling the task and offers desired results to His devotees. Performing the Sudarshana homam benefits the Yajman in all walks of life, as it clears the obstacles that create hindrance in success and growth on personal and professional front. As per the tantric texts, there are ten types of Mantravada doshas from 10 directions, called Marana (Death), Uchatana (Separation), Mohana, Vidhveshana (misunderstanding), Manthra, Tanthra (spell), Visha choorna (Poison), Prayoga, Abhichara (black magic) and Kruthrima (deception). Sudarshan chakra is said to destroy all of these doshas. Hence Sudarshan Homa is performed to evoke the protection & victory aspect of the chakra.
