The Dus Mahavidya Goddesses, also known as the wisdom Goddesses are the ten divine aspects of Goddess Parvati. Born with different innate powers, these ten forms of Adi Parashakti represent the ten divine forms of feminine energies.
Each Goddess that is a part of Dus Mahavidya has a remarkable origin, exhibits unique qualities, strengths, and secure a significant place in Hinduism. These Goddesses educate one about the Supreme feminine powers by making them realise that, if a woman can be a mother and shower ocean of love, the same mother can also take the form of a fierce and powerful woman and punish her enemies and those who do wrong without any mercy.

Each Mahavidya teaches us about specific virtues and also educates us about the lesson’s life offers and how to overcome obstacles. Each Goddess inspires and helps us to have a better vision. It was the ancient Holy Scriptures especially the Devi-Bhagavata Purana that envisioned and emphasized on the belief that the Supreme power was a female. The Holy Shakta Maha-Bhagavata Purana beautifully describes how each of the Mahavidyas came into being.
Let us learn about each of the Mahavidyas by reading about them in order to have a clear understanding of them.
Story of Dus Mahavidya Goddesses
Shakti, a primordial energy which existed even before the universe did. This powerful energy manifested in various forms, some of which came to be known as the Dus Mahavidya. Let us learn how this energy got divided into ten different forms and came into being as the Dus Mahavidyas.
According to the legend, as mentioned in the Shakta Maha-Bhagavata Purana, Maa Sati who was the daughter of Daksha Prajapati was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Daksha Prajapati did not approve of this hence, when Mata Sati got married to Lord Shiva, Daksha was very angry and thought of planning an evil scheme against Lord Shiva. Daksha Prajapati organized a grand Yajna and invited all the Gods and Goddesses for the same but he did not invite Lord Shiva or Mata Sati for the Yajna. When Mata Sati learned about the Yajna from Narad Muni, She was excited and asked Lord Shiva to accompany Her to Yajna. Lord Shiva told her that they cannot attend the Yajna as they were not invited but Sati said that ‘a daughter does not need any invitation from her father’. On which Mahadeva insinuated Mata Sati that the Yajna was just an excuse to insult Him (Lord Shiva) and even if Sati attended the Yajna, the outcome would not be auspicious. Maa Sati even after learning this, wanted to attend the Yagna. Soon, Lord Shiva tried to dissuade Her from attending the Yagna. This is when Mata Sati couldn’t control Her anger as She felt humiliated by Lord Shiva’s dissuasion and She took the form of Supreme Goddess. Looking at the divine and unusual form of Maa Sati, the oceans roared, the sky turned dark and the Earth trembled. Looking at Her form, Lord Shiva was shocked and He knew that Mata Sati’s would not calm down so easily. Lord Shiva tried to get away from the spot in order to allow Her to calm down but Mata Sati who by now had dawned the form of Supreme Goddess, multiplied Herself and took ten different forms so that Lord Shiva could not escape from any of the ten directions. These ten forms came to be known as Dus Mahavidya. Each of this Goddess has a different story, strengths and powers as mentioned above. Let us learn the names of these 10 divine Goddesses.
