In India, the Rudraksha plant is mainly distributed in the southwestern borders of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. 70% of the Rudraksha trees are found in the Indonesia region, 25% in Nepal and 5% in India.

TYPES OF ELAEOCARPUS GANITRUS

The Elaeocarpaceae family consists of about 605 species under 13 genera. It is distributed mostly in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Elaeocarpus is the largest genera in the family with about 430 species. Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb. & Don, an endangered species is mostly distributed in Eastern Himalayan regions. The fruit of the species is edible and used in various traditional medicines, contain hard and highly ornamental stony endocarp (nut) commonly known as ‘Rudraksha’, which is used as religious jewellery in the form of beads throughout India and southeast Asia. The other members of Elaeocarpus is an important source of many pharmacologically and medicinally important alkaloids, which have been widely studied for analgesic, antiviral, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antioxidative, antitumour, antihypertensive and antidepressant properties. Elaeocarpus is the largest genus and is represented by 9 species, including 3 species which are endemic to southern Western Ghats viz., Elaeocarpus munronii (Wight) Mast, E. recurvatus Corner and E. venustus Bedd.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ON ELAEOCARPUS GANITRUS

Elaeocarpus Ganitrus showed significant effects in 5-HT induced inflammation, whereas ethanol extract inhibits histamine.

Antioxidant:
The aqueous extract isolated from the seed powder of the E. ganitrus plant was examined for the hypertensive activity in renal artery of occluded hypertensive.

Antimicrobial:
Vitro study was conducted on bacteria and fungi to detect the antimicrobial activity of the aqueous extract isolated from the leaves of the elaeocarpus ganitrus plant.

Antifungal:
The chloroform and ethanol extract of elaeocarpus ganitrus plant showed significant antifungal property against candida albicans, whereas these extracts showed moderate inhibitory action against aspergillus niger.

Antidepressant:
