Nag Panchami is a festival that falls in the month of Shravan, dedicated to the worship of snakes, providing relief to those with Kal Sarpa Dosha, alleviating fears, and bringing protection and prosperity. It emphasizes respect for nature and the divine significance of snakes in Hindu mythology.
Nagas or snakes hold special significance in Hindu scriptures. Lord Vishnu rests on Shesha, Lord Shiva keeps the Vasuki snake on his neck, which played a crucial role during Samudra Manthan, and Lord Krishna danced on the Kaliya snake to remove people's fears. Snakes (Nagas) are said to be the rulers of Pataaloka (the underworld) and the sons of Kashyapa, Brahma's son.
Nagas or snakes hold special significance in Hindu scriptures. Lord Vishnu rests on Shesha, Lord Shiva keeps the Vasuki snake on his neck, which played an important role during Samudra Manthan, and Lord Krishna danced on the Kaliya snake to remove fears of people of Gokul. Snakes (Nagas) are said to be the rulers of Pataaloka (the underworld) and the sons of Kashyapa, Brahma's son. The names of the nine Naag Devatas are Anant, Vasuki, Shesh, Padmanabh, Kambal, Shankhapal, Dhrutrashtra, Takshak, and Kalia. Praying to these deities is said to protect one from all evils and help achieve victory in life.
On Nag Panchami, by fasting and worshiping the Nag Devatas, one's desires and ambitions are fulfilled. Their worship removes Vastu Dosha from dwelling, grants protection from black magic, negativity or Nazar Dosha and gives good health and disease free life. Worshiping them on Nag Panchami also reduces the malefic effects of Kaal Sarp Dosha. During this time, several snakes come out of their holes due to the rains filling up their homes, and they are worshipped instead of feared. Digging of the earth is avoided, making activities like ploughing fields and digging foundations considered inauspicious.
Puja services included are Kalash Sthapana, Panchang Sthapana (Gauri Ganesh, Punyavachan, Shodash Matrika, Navgraha, Sarvotabhadra), 64 Yogini Pujan, Shetrapal Pujan, Swasti Vachan, Sankalpa, Ganesh Pujan, Navgraha Pujan, invocation of major Gods and Goddesses in Kalash, Nag Yantra and Idol Abhishek and Pujan with milk, honey, herbs and exotic liquids, Nag Dev Mantra Japa (11,000 chants), Yagna, Aarti, and Pushpaanjali.
