What is Dhanteras? How to do Dhanteras Puja at Home?

The festival of Diwali is the biggest festival of Hindus and celebrated with fanfare in India and in the rest of the World. The auspicious day of Dhanteras is the first day of Diwali celebrations. The term Dhanteras is a compound of two words, 'Dhan' meaning wealth and 'teras', means the thirteenth (13th) day of the Krishna Paksha or the dark fortnight of the waning moon, the month of Kartik. It is the day when Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity, wealth and abundance and Lord Kubera, the treasurer of all wealth and riches on Earth and Heaven are worshipped, to welcome the energy of wealth and abundance in home and life. The day is also known as Dhantrayodashi.

Traditionally, people buy Gold, Silver, Platinum, Gemstones, household metal utensils. The entrance of the house is decorated with Toran, bright Rangolis are displayed on the floor in front of the entrance and 13 Oil Lamps are lit outside the entrance door.

In the evening the family members perform the Dhanteras Puja at home, following the Dhanteras Puja Vidhi. Dhanteras Puja at the office is also done and the tradition of buying something new on this day to keep in the office for the rest of the year is followed by many.

In the Southern states of India, Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped on this day. Lord Dhanvantari is Lord Vishnu's form and is the God of Ayurvedic Medicines, the Physician of Gods, healing and health. It is believed that Lord Dhanvantari emerged with the pot of Amrit, from the Samudra Manthan on this day. So, Dhanteras is about worshipping both good health and wealth.
