Significance of Pitru Paksha Pujas

Pitru Paksha Pujas are performed as a respect to ancestors by offering them food, water, etc., which helps to liberate their souls and move on to higher realms or attain Moksha. The Pitru Paksha or Shraadh is a period of 16 days, each year, in which the family members of transcended loved ones/ancestors, offer special ritualistic prayers by following the Pitru Paksha Puja Vidhi. As mentioned in the Puranas it is important to garner the blessings of ancestors to lead a smooth life and liberate their souls, which is said to be achieved when Pitru Paksha Pujas are conducted every year.

The Pitru Pooja is very significant for Hindus. It is believed that the transcended loved ones are restless in the Pitra Lok or Pitru Lok which is ruled by Yama, the God of death.

When Pitru Paksha Puja samagri is done by offering food, known as Pind Daan to the ancestors and doing the Shraadh Puja brings peace to the souls of ancestors and guides them to Moksha. If it is not possible to do Tarpan on each day of the Pitru Paksha, it should be done on the last day of Pitru Paksha, i.e., while performing the Mahalaya Shraadh Puja or Pitra Puja on Amavasya.

Tarpan is also a part of Pitru Paksha Puja Vidhi, which is offering water along with Mantra chanting. Tarpan is done every Pitru Paksha day or on the last day by following the Puja Vidhi. Another important ritual is to donate money/food/clothes to the needy during the Pitru Paksha. Feeding a sumptuous meal to Brahmins is also considered to bring positive results during the Pitru Paksha. Tripindi Shraadh Puja is conducted for three generation of ancestors for liberating their soul and resting them in peace.
