Navdurga Mantra
The Nav Durga puja, which celebrates the nine forms of Durga, is celebrated in many Indian homes. The nine days are solely dedicated to the nine avatars of Goddess Durga, the nine divine feminine energy forces. During the Navratri festival, these nine forms of Shakti are worshipped as per the below-mentioned order:
- Shailputri (first day)
- Bramhacharini (second day)
- Chandraghanta (third day)
- Kushmanda (fourth day)
- Skandmata (fifth day)
- Katyayani (sixth day)
- Kalratri (seventh day)
- Mahagauri (eight day)
- Siddhidatri (ninth day)
There is a different mantra for each of the nine Goddesses. The following are the Navdurga mantras and their meanings.
Navdurga Mantra in Hindi and Sanskrit:
Mantras for Shailputri Devi:
(1) Om Devi Shailputryai Swaha (ॐ देवी शैल्पुत्र्यै स्वाहा)
(2) Vande Vanchhit Laabhaay, Chandrardhkritshekharaam | Vrisharudham Shooldharaam Shailputriim Yashaswinim ||
Meaning: I worship Goddess Shailputri to fulfil my wishes, she is adorned with a half moon on her head, rides on a bull, carries a trident and is illustrious.
Mantras for Devi Brahmcharini:
(1) Om Devi Brahmcharinyai Namah (ॐ देवी ब्रह्म्चरिण्यै नमः)
(2) Dadhaanaa Kar Padmaabhyaamakshmala Kamandaloo | Devi Prasidatu Mayi Brahmcharinyanuttamaa||
Meaning: O Goddess Brahmcharini, who holds the rosary and Kamandalu in her hands, bless me. A devotee who is eager to know God or seeks knowledge should worship Devi Brahmcharini on the second day of Navratri.
Mantras for Devi Chandraghanta:
(1) Om Devi Chandraghantayayi Namah (ॐ देवी चन्द्रघन्टायै नमः)
(2) Pindaj Pravaarudh chandkopastrkairyuta | Prasadam Tanute Madhyam Chandraghanteti vishrutaa ||
Meaning: O Goddess Chandraghanta, who rides on a Tiger, angry on enemies, holds many weapons in 10 hands, bless me. Devotees, who have many enemies and obstacles in their life, should worship Devi Chandraghanta on the third day of Navratri. Goddess Chandraghanta then destroys all obstacles and fears from one’s life.
Mantras for Goddess Kushmanda:
(1) Om Devi Kushmandayayi Namah (ॐ देवी कूष्माण्डायै नमः)
(2) Suraasampoorna Kalasham Rudhiraaplutamev Cha | Dadhaanaa Hastpadmaabhyaam Kushmanda Shubhdaastu Me ||
Meaning: Goddess Kushmanda who holds two pitchers full of Madira and blood in her lotus hands, be encouraging to me. Goddess Kushmanda is the Mother of the Sun. She creates the entire universe and the solar system. Devotees must worship her to achieve success in her creation.
Mantras for Goddess Skandamata:
(1) Om Devi Skandmatayayi Namah (ॐ देवी स्कन्दमातायै नमः)
(2) Sinhaasangataam Nityam Padmaanchit Kardwayaa | Shubhdaastu Sadaa Devi Skandmata Yashaswini ||
Meaning: Skandmata, who rides on Lion with Kartikeya, holds a lotus in her two hands and Varmudra in one hand, be propitious to me. Skandmata takes care of a devotee as her own child. Devotees must worship Skandamata specifically if they have many obstacles in life. Skandmata then takes care of the devotee as her own child and removes obstacles.
Mantras for Goddess Katyayani:
(1) Om Devi Katyayanyayi Namah (ॐ देवी कात्यायन्यै नमः)
(2) Chandrahaasojjval Karaa Shaardoolvarvaahanaa | Katyayani Shubham Dadyaad Devi Daanavghatini ||
Meaning: Devi Katyayani, who holds Chandrahaas Sword and other weapons in her ten hands, rides on a Lion destroying demons, be propitious to me.
Mantras for Goddess Kalratri:
( 1 ) Om Devi Kalratryayi Namah (ॐ देवी कालरात्र्यै नमः)
( 2 ) Ekveni Japakarnpoora Nagna Kharaasthita | Lamboshthi Karnika karni Tailaabhyaktshariirini ||
Vaam Paadollasallohlata Kantakbhushanaa | Bardhan Moordham Dhwajaa Krishnaa Kalratrirbhayankari ||
Meaning: This mantra describes her form and is used to meditate upon her. She rides on a donkey. She has long lips and a lustrous body. She is wearing ornaments on her legs. She is dark and has unlocked hair, big eyes and ears. Meditating on this form of Kalratri removes all obstacles and ill effects of black magical created by others.
Mantras for Goddess Mahagauri:
( 1 ) Om Devi Mahagauryayi Namah (ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः)
( 2 ) Shwete Vrishesamarudha Shwetaambardhara Shuchih | Mahagauri Shubham Dadyanmahadev Pramodadaa ||
Meaning: Goddess Mahagauri, who rides on a white bull, wears pure white clothes, the giver of happiness, be propitious to me. Worshippers can pray to her on the eighth day of Navratri for peace and happiness in life.
Mantras for Goddess Siddhidatri Mantra:
(1) Om Devi Siddhidatryayi Namah (ॐ देवी सिद्धिदात्र्यै नमः)
(2) Siddha Gandharva Yakshdyairasurairamarairapi | Sevyamaanaa Sadabhuyaat Siddhida Siddhidayini ||
Meaning: Goddess Siddhidatri, who is worshipped by Siddha, Gandharva, Yaksha, Gods, Demons etc., holds Conch, Chakra, Gada and Lotus in her hands, giver of all siddhis and victory all over, be propitious to me. Devotees must worship Goddess Siddhidatri on the ninth day of Navratri because she gives the results of nine days of worship.
