Vat Savitri (Vat Purnima) 2024: Date, Timing & Tithi

Vat Purnima or Wat Purnima/Pournima Chavan is a traditional festival celebrated across India in different states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, and Haryana. Vat Savitri Purnima celebration is observed by married women, which includes observance of fasting called Vat Savitri Vrat (Savitri Vrata), listening to Vat Savitri Vrat Katha followed by Vat Savitri Puja Vidhi. This celebration of Vat Savitri Purnima, Vat Savitri Vrat, Vat Savitri Puja Vidhi and listening of Vat Savitri Vrat Katha are followed in Odisha (or Orissa in India), Mithila region (India and Nepal) on the Amavasya (the no moon day that falls in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha as per Hindu calendar). The locals in the western Odisha region call Vat Savitri ‘Sabitri Uwaans’.

Traditional festivals of Amanta and Purnimanta, as per the Hindu lunar calendar, occur on the same day, but there are gaps in specific years. The northern parts, like Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh of India, go by Purnimanta Calendar, whereas the southern parts follow the Amanta calendar.

Vat Savitri Vrat Katha

As told in Purana, Asvapati, the king of the Madra Kingdom, did not have any child from his marriage for a long time. Disturbed and unhappy with a childless marriage, King Asvapati performed severe austerities and prayers to the sun god Savitr, the pleased Sun god Savitr granted king Asvapati a boon that a female child will be born. The king named this newborn ‘Savitri’ because she was a boon from the Sun god Savitr. But, there was something different about Savitri; she grew up to be an ascetic, this naturally inbuilt ascetic trait in her was clearly attributed to the conditions and reasons she was born, which is her father's austerities to get a child (Savitri).

The ascetic Savitri was a perfect example of devoted, determined, and loyal, but no man was interested in marrying her because of her ascetic trait. Savitri, on her own, set out to find a man suitable for marriage and met Satyavan, son of the blind king Dyumatsena of Salwa Kingdom. Determined to marry him, Savitri returned home and found Sage Narada/Narada Muni had already informed her father about her choice Satyavan, whose death was certain in a year. Her father and Narada muni asked her to find someone else. Still, the ascetic-spirited Savitri denied and determined to select a man only once in a lifetime, that is, Satyavan, and no one else.

No way to convince Savitri, Narada Muni, and her father, King Asvapati agreed to her choice.

A year later, seated under a banyan tree, the time for Satyavan’s death came, Satyavan in his wife's lap had to give in to the death summons from the God of death, Yama. As soon as the messengers of Yama appeared on the scene to take away her husband, Savitri refused to hand her husband over to them. They could not take him away until God of death Yama Himself appeared who, seeing her matchless devotion and determination and spiritual knowledge and wit, offered her a boon. She asked for eyesight and restoration of the kingdom for her father-in-law, a hundred children for her father, and a hundred children for herself and Satyavan. Yama couldn't agree with her last wish, but he was so impressed with her determination and yet was disturbed to see an earthly person had so much power to debate and was ready and started following Lord Yama to the netherworld. Her devotion, wits, and spiritual knowledge compelled Lord Yama to grant Savitri’s demand to return to earth with her husband.

This entire episode happened under a Vat Vriksha/a banyan tree. Therefore, the banyan tree (Vat tree or Vat Vriksha) has gained complete importance and is the centre of worship on Vat Savitri Purnima and Vat Savitri Vrat (fasting) and a very important part of Vat Savitri Puja Vidhi.
